사람은 이세상에 왔다가 많은 것을 남기고 가게 됩니다. 재산이 없다고 남길 것이 없는 것은 아닙니다. 이것은 노인으로서 당신이 어떻게 처신 해야 하느냐를 말합니다.
이세상에 남기는 흔적입니다. 호랑이는 죽어서 가죽을 남기고 사람은 죽어서 이름을 남긴다? 그거야 유명하고 훌륭한 사람들의 이야기고. 이름 없이 소리 없이 살다가 가는 평범한 사람들이 무슨 놈의 가죽이며 이름을 남기겠는가.
속담이나 경구라는 것이 다 교육적인 의미로 쓰여지는 것이니까. 말꼬리 잡고 시비할 필요는 없다. 그러나 우리 평범한 사람들에게도 이 세상에 살다 가면 많은 흔적을 남기게 된다.
인류니 역사니 민족이니 국가니 하는, 또는 예술이니 학문이니 하는 따위가 아니어서 그렇지. 자기 주위의 가족 친지 또 많은 아는 사람들,
그 들이 비록 애뜻 하고 고마운 정을 나눈 사람들이 아니고 경쟁, 미움, 질투의 관계에 있든 사람들에게도
어떤 형태이건 흔적은 남기게 되는 것이다.
이 모든 애증의 관계란 이승에서의 삶을 전재로 얽혀진 것이지 이제 이승의 연을 놓는 마당에서야 부질없고 부끄러운 기억 들일 뿐이다.
자기가 앉아있던 자리를 어지럽게 흩트려 놓고
떠나는 것처럼 개운치 안은 뒷맛을 남길 필요야 없지 않을까.
인간이 갖는 다섯 가지 복중에 죽는 복 이 들어있다.
고통 없이 죽는다던가 하는 그런 것이 아니고
어떻게 인생의 마감을 잘 하느냐를 말하는 것이다.
내가 떠난 자리에는 어떤 흔적이 남을까?
이제 떠날 채비가 되었다면
자리에서 일어나기 전에 한번쯤은 주위를 돌아볼일이다.
